The name of Isfahan reminds us of its beautiful bridge. One of these remarkable bridges with historic values, is Si-o-se pol.
It was built between 1599 and 1602, during the kingship of Shah Abbas l, by the attempt of Allah Verdi Khan, the great commander of Shah Abbas.
The name of this bridge has been changed several times. It was called Bridge of Sha Abbas (it was built on reign of Shah Abbas), Allah Verdi Khan (because of his effort for building it) Jolfa because the habitant of Jolfa pass through it), 40 spring (at firs it had 40 arch) 33 spring (it has 33 archs now) Zayanderud (as it is the longest bridge on the River) and 33 pol (33bridge).
In Safavid era it was a public place for holding ceremonies like Khaj Shouyan, Nowroz (new year) and Tirgan, in which people splashed water on each other, laughed and prayed for rain.
This magnificent bridge was designed and constructed by the famous architect Hossein Bana Isfahany; and it is unlike other bridges, built on the widest part of the river!
The materials used in this bridge are: stone as the base, bricks and special cement called Sarouj which is a great invention of Persian architects.
