Khatam Kary )inlay work) is a unique handcraft of Isfahan. Different objects specially gift box, penner, clocks, frames, vase, table, and even rooms are ornamented by this art, made by putting a different type of triangles wood pieces. it may seems simple but let me explain more.
Each piece contains at least 3 triangles and at most 400 for only one pattern. Each color needs special material. Colors like green, black, yellow, cream, red, and brown are made of special tree’s wood. for golden and silver color they use brace and aluminum. For white color, seashells and bones are used. The camel’s or horse’s bones will remain in a limewater for 3-9 month so all the fat will be gone and the slightly white color will appear.
Then they cut it to 1-2.5 mm diameter and 30 cm long and polish it to be in well-shaped triangles, put the woods together in a special pattern and press it. So the first pattern will be formed then glue several of them to the surface of the object to create the final pattern that we see.
